Basement Epoxy Floor Coating

Filed Under (Basement Design) by admin

When it comes to the issue of flooring your basement, you will really need to think practically.  As you probably know, basements can be very damp areas and are prone to mold and mildew.  This might not be a problem to you if you live in an arid climate however if you live somewhere that can get a lot of rain, then dampness is an issue you need to have in mind when choosing flooring.

This is why concrete is such a prevalent flooring type.  It’s cheap, tough and easy to clean.  The problem is that it tends to look pretty ghastly.  So, in this case, it could be a good idea to buy an epoxy floor coating.

Rust-Oleum do a very popular epoxy floor coating which is easy to install for any DIYer.  You don’t even need to prime the floor before using the kit.  The colors you can choose from are gray and tan so hopefully you’ll like one of these colors.

Before using the kit, you should have a look around the floor to see if you are able to find any cracks.  If you can then you should fill them up with Rust-Oleum’s concrete patch.  Then you need to give the floor a good clean before using the kit.

Only one coat is needed and this will make your floor easier to keep clean and resist staining.  You can also use it on the walls if you wish.  Bear in mind that this kit shouldn’t be used outside – it’s for indoor use only.

By having an epoxy coating on your floor you will have the peace of mind that it is helping to protect your floor from water that is such a big problem in basements.  Whether you end up with a flood from outside or an appliance, you’ll not need to overly worry about the floor getting damaged.

Interestingly, epoxy is also fire resistant, so if you have a fire the coating on your floor will also be beneficial if there is a fire.

Of course, you don’t want it to be only practical.  You also want your floor to look great.  Epoxy allows you to do this too.  If you want a more homely appearance to your basement, you can always add in a rug or two.  This will help to soften the appearance and if they get damaged by damp, you can easily have them replaced.
